October News for A Cozy Death Book Club

Italian Village

Newsletter News

What a great meeting in September! We discussed Murder in an Italian Village by Michael Falco. There were mixed reviews of the book. Some of our members thought the book was fun and enjoyed the setting, the Italian phrases that were integrated throughout the novel, and the general upbeat feel of the writing. However, other members thought that the story was farfetched, were annoyed by the coincidence of the protagonist’s best friend’s brother as the Chief of Police, skeptical of the ease with which people could break into the Mayor’s office, and so on. How interesting that the book caused very polar opposite sentiments!

We played a new game. Tahlia organized a multiple choice game on Kahoot. The game had every one of the participants highly engaged. The game’s questions were all taken from the Michael Falco novel’s Italian phrases. We had three winners whose names were on the Kahoot site for the participants. You people know who you are. Could each of you send us your address by way of our website’s comments section. We’d like to send those prizes out as soon as possible.

Our next meeting is scheduled for October 26th. We’re reading Miss Zukas and the Library Murders by Jo Dereske. The book is available from a variety of sources, but for those of you who want to explore, I found the following site: https://www.kdan.com/blog/sites-download-free-pdf-books#10_E-Books_Directory

I located the novel from a local library through #4 from the above site. Of course, your local library will be different so explore the various sites. The book is fairly short and from a series. It reminded me a bit of the Miss Pollifax mysteries in the way Miss Zukas is described. Of course she’s not a spy like Miss Pollifax, but the tone is similar. After we discuss the book we’ll play a game with pumpkins (make believe pumpkins), apples, and candy corn. Join us! Prizes for the winners as always!

Take photos of your pet’s/s’ costume for Halloween and send them to us. We’ll post them on our website and the ones with the most response will get a prize. Barnaby has to have a costume this year because Diana’s office is having a Halloween party and Barnaby is invited. I’ll have to sew it so I need to decide in the next couple of days. He’s such a fussbudget about wearing anything on his head that it rather limits me. I’ll take a photo of him when he’s trying the costume on for his last “fitting.”

Get ready for The Woman in Cabin 10 movie made from the Ruth Ware novel of the same name. Keira Knightley plays Lo, and I can’t wait for October 10’s debut on Netflix. Interestingly, we had been toying with including the novel for next year. Great minds!  My other “can’t wait” is Beyond Paradise, Season 3. It’s on BritBox and will stream mid-October. I love this show. It’s truly cozy.

Folks, join us at our meetings. We talk about books we’re reading, books we wish that we were reading, and this and that of a very friendly group of participants. You’ll have a few laughs, think about someone’s point of view, and maybe win a prize or two. It’s a lovely way to spend an hour on a Sunday once a month (the 4th Sunday of the month)! Sign up on our website: www.acozydeath.com

See you on October 26th! Keep reading mysteries.

Fondly,

Karin and Tahlia
