October Monthly Blog

Happy October Folks! I have spent the day procrastinating and not getting down to the business of blogging. One would think that I didn’t like to write -- and I really do. I spent the early part of the day trying to delete a satisfactory amount of emails to bring down my “unread” emails to a reasonable number. This task was interrupted repeatedly with gazing out of my window at the flower filled balcony. There’s a breeze and the blossoms are waving about as if they’re entirely carefree. Earlier I caught sight of a hummingbird traveling from one flower to the other. I totally blame the hummingbird for my procrastination as I keep watching to see if it comes back.

In honor of the month we bought some candy corn. October always makes me think of candy corn and Diana, my daughter, was out and about and brought back a bag of it as a present to us both. We each had a handful, then secretly another one or two candies and sheepishly confessed to each other that it’s way too sweet to abide. Each of us felt like we had curdled tongue. How funny to think it’s no longer the treat it once was. My other favorite thing is to buy different types of pumpkins, small, funny colors, large, all of them appeal to me in October. What I’d do with them I have not a clue. I have to hold onto my “almost bought it” impulses.

Sweaters are my other October passion. The catalogues begin to show cashmere sweaters and really thick wool sweaters. I have to remind myself that I live where it’s mostly warm and don’t need thick wool sweaters. So, to make myself feel better, I started knitting a lovely weight woolen sweater. This project will take me forever to complete. I know me. So far I’ve got 4 inches of the left front done. By next month I’m aiming to complete the left front and have started on the right. This is ambitious for me, but I must make a public goal so that I’ll work towards meeting it. If I don’t I’ll be embarrassed now that I’ve told you.

Did you all finish your holiday shopping? October is filling up with projects for me (knitting, finishing the 5 books I have to read, completing chapters 12 through 16 for book 2, writing the letters I owe -- too many to admit to -- and painting the 6 small canvases I had planned, and keeping up with friends),  and time is running out. I must admit that I bless Amazon every day. If it weren’t for sites like Amazon I’m not sure how I would get last minute shopping done.

Nonetheless, I’m happy that it’s October. I finished September with a week full of “stick my head under my pillow” kind of comments. I confessed to my doctor that I’m given to distractibility and he said that he had noticed. I smiled and replied that I’d try to cut to the chase when I talk to him. Then a good friend asked what I was doing and I replied that I was working on chapter 12. She commented that she was sure that I’d have finished writing the book. To finish off my week of something’s in retrograde, I sent in a short story to a writing contest and a few minutes later -- I swear it was no more than 3 minutes -- I received a return email asking if I wanted the rejection letter sent as an attachment to my story entry or separately. What? No one read it yet. Where’s my pillow?

Well, September is over. Here’s to a handful of candy corn!
