News for A Cozy Death Mystery Book Club

Club News

A couple of weeks ago we had Sue Ann Jaffarian come to speak with the group. Sue Ann is the author of the Odelia Grey mysteries, among her several series and was an enthusiastic speaker for the group. She answered a lot of our questions about writing her various series, and is obviously her own inspiration for her main character Odelia Grey. Now, I’m interested in reading her other books from the other series. We were so lucky to have her come and are hoping that she’ll return in July after her June publication of her travel book about her travels in her RV.

This month we are reading For Whom the Book Tolls by Laura Gail Black. It’s a fast read. We’ll be playing Jeopardy using the book as our Wikipedia of knowledge! We meet again on the 25th of February at 2:00 p.m. Pacific (3:00 p.m. Mtn/Arizona time, 4:00p.m. Central, 5:00 p.m. Eastern). Join us on Zoom. The Zoom information will be on the Meetup site for those who have RSVP’d. If you have RSVP’d that you’re coming, please do. We prepare for the number who say that they’ll be at the meeting and are disappointed if you don’t show up and haven’t let us know.

Monday, 2/19, the third season of The Madame Blanc Mysteries is back on Acorn. I love the series. It takes place in France, and I sit and watch while making believe I’m drinking wine with them – they seem to drink much more than I could and still function. Anyway, it’s sunny in that French impressionist way, the small town is welcoming, and there are always antiques and baubles available to purchase. I’m also watching Monsieur Spade. Episode 5 comes on next week. It’s a Dashiell Hammett inspired series and also takes place in France. Sam Spade’s house is decorated with amazing paintings that are framed exquisitely. I am jealous, and yet I know that it’s all set design. Who cares, it takes me on a journey.

You’ve probably noticed our website’s new look this year. I am so grateful to Tahlia for working on it while her new little one slept. It’s a much more focused website. We no longer have products, and the postings go up in the order they’re written. I’m working on the calendars, but until we’ve finished the calendar’s new look, the books for the year are:

January:         any of the Odelia Grey mysteries

February:      For Whom the Book Tolls by Laura Gail Black

March:           Death of a Domestic Diva by Sharon Short

April:              The Mistress of Bhatia House by Sujata Massey

May:                The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gillman

June:              Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christie

            July:                author TBA

August:          The Crime at Black Dudley by Marjorie Allingham

September:   Aunty Lee’s Delights by Ovida Yin

October:        Fatal Fudge Swirl by Meri Allen

November:    Death in a Turkey Town by Melanie Jackson

December:    Hercule Poirot’s Silent Night by Sophie Hannah

If you’ve read any of these, please send us your review. We’ll include it with our monthly news. Also, if you have a connection to an author who you think would be willing to speak to the group, please send that on. We can always rearrange the calendar.

I hope to see you Sunday, February 25th!
